How to Replace a Furnace Filter

A clean filter protects the system and improves airflow. Filter changes are a routine resident responsibility.

  • Correctly sized filter

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Turn the thermostat or system off before you begin.

  2. 2

    Locate the filter slot at the furnace or the return-air vent.

  3. 3

    Slide out the old filter and note the size printed on its frame.

  4. 4

    Insert the correctly sized filter with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace.

  5. 5

    Turn the system back on. Submit a request if you cannot locate or fit the filter.
