Toilet Clogged

A single clogged toilet can often be cleared safely with a flange plunger before a request is needed.

Safety first

Stop flushing once the bowl is full. If water is rising toward the rim or other fixtures are also backing up, submit a request.

Tools & supplies

  • Flange plunger
  • Gloves

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Stop flushing so the bowl does not overflow.

  2. 2

Fit a flange plunger fully over the drain opening to form a tight seal.

  3. 3

Plunge with steady strokes for 15–20 seconds, then check if the water drains.

  4. 4

Repeat once or twice if the level slowly drops.

  5. 5

If the bowl stays full, water rises, or other fixtures back up, submit a request.
