Emergency Shutoffs

Water Shutoff

Knowing your main water shutoff location can limit damage during an active leak.

Safety first

Never touch a shutoff surrounded by standing water near electrical outlets, panels, or appliances. Call 911 or our emergency line.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Locate your main water shutoff now—before an emergency—often near the water heater, in a basement, or in a utility closet.

  2. 2

For a single fixture, use the smaller valve beneath the sink or behind the toilet.

  3. 3

Turn the valve clockwise (to the right) to shut the water off.

  4. 4

Never touch a valve while standing in water near outlets or appliances.

  5. 5

After stopping the flow, submit an emergency request or call the emergency line.
